Grey Bird

One late Sunday afternoon while living in Southern California, I finally got around to vacuuming my truck.  Descending the stairs I opened the sliding glass door of the storage area located beneath my apartment to grab the bright orange extension cord thrown in the corner.

As I picked up the cord, I suddenly heard the sound of flapping wings. Following the direction of the sound, my eyes spotted a light grey bird lying flat on its back, little legs straight up in the air, fluttering its wings. Next to the bird was a small smudge of fresh blood.

Intermittently, the bird attempted to right itself but couldn’t get off its back. As I watched its helpless struggle, I began to piece together what had happened. The abandoned storage area had a three-inch wide space in the wall above an old air conditioning unit. The bird had somehow crash dived through the opening and hit the cement floor where it lay flat on its back, stunned.

Suddenly, vacuuming my truck seemed unimportant. I ran back up the stairs and began searching the yellow pages for bird rescue agencies. I actually found a “bird hospital,” but since it was Easter Sunday, this and many other facilities were closed. After about thirty minutes of calling around, I finally connected with the Humane Society of Ventura County, who assured me they would send an “ambulance” out from Camarillo.

Bird Paramedic

Forty minutes later the “bird paramedic” arrived. He scooped up Grey Bird with his sure hand and talked to it a bit before he gently placed it in the back of his “ambulance.”  He assured me someone would nurse the bird back to health and then it would be released.

There are a number of scripture verses that reveal God cares for the birds.  In Matthew 10, Jesus said that even a sparrow doesn’t fall to the ground without God’s will. It is comforting to know how much our Creator does care for the birds and animals. But it’s even more comforting to know how much the Lord cares for us! In Matthew 10, Jesus concluded by saying to those who listened, “So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows" (Matthew 10:31).

If life’s circumstances have knocked you flat on your back, rest assured, God sees your struggle. God cares. And, God will help. Just ask.
