My son recently spent some time with his grandmother and she gave him $20 to spend on anything he wanted.

Home again, after the trip to his grandmother’s, he proudly showed me an entire bag full of toys. Among his most prized playing possessions was a large neon-orange foam boomerang.

As I watched my son throw the boomerang around our backyard, he got more powerful and precise with every throw. On what would be his last throw he threw it so hard he let out a vicious bear-scaring growl that propelled the boomerang directly into the very highest and densest branches of a GI-normous oak tree.

My son turned and looked at me, speechless and with his mouth gaping open—pointing at the evil tree that gobbled up his boomerang! As his face quickly cycled through the various stages of grief, my mind was racing with scenarios about how I could get it down, but the only thing I could tell him was “pray.” We prayed that God would get his boomerang down; maybe a bird, storm, or an earthquake—something.

God Did It!

The next day—less than 24 hours later—my son checked the backyard and to his surprise, the boomerang was lying on the ground right in front of the tree. He ran inside wildly swinging the boomerang over his head and excitedly shouted “God did it! God did it! He heard and answered my prayer! God cares about my boomerang!”

That day my son learned an invaluable lesson about God’s heart towards him and all of us, His children: He is aware of us; He cares about what makes us happy and hurt; what we need and truly hears and answers our prayers.

After talking about the incident with my son God impressed me to find and read Matthew 7:7-11 “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. ‘Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him."

That day God showed my son that He cared about him and yes--even his boomerang—and God cares about you too.
